The project delivers the adaptive reuse of the heritage-listed Ultimo Power Station buildings to create world-class exhibition spaces and renewed public domain within Sydney’s new creative industries precinct. It targets 5-Star Green Star Design & As Built, and a 5-Star NABERS rating.
Key features include upgraded and new exhibition spaces, a major landscaped public domain, rooftop terrace and café. The original heritage fabric – including the Power Station, Turbine Hall, and Post Office – will be conserved and restored, while the 1988 Wran Building will be retained and revitalised for exhibition spaces.
A reoriented main entrance and new public square will enhance access via The Goods Line, improving connectivity with surrounding precincts and transport. The project will elevate the visitor experience through improved circulation, expanded community use, and dynamic public engagement.
“As custodians of one of the largest and most exceptional collections of objects in Australia, the Powerhouse Museum plays an important role in bringing the arts, design, science and technology and their history together.
John Graham
Minister for the Arts and Minister for Music and Nighttime Economy
